Co-Living-Campus

TU Braunschweig's North Campus is to be rethought: Where today there are monofunctional campus buildings and neglected open and green spaces, a lively, multifaceted science quarter is to be created over the next few years that combines education, living and community.
In a two-phase, experimental planning process, the ‘CO-WETTBEWERB’, four different teams, consisting of planning offices and students from TU Braunschweig, cooperatively investigated urban development approaches.

Our approach:
Campus Kiez meets Campus Wald

The site will be further developed in terms of urban planning, taking into account its existing buildings and green spaces as well as their qualities and potential. Two specific sub-areas will be created: the ‘Campus Kiez’ and the ‘Campus Wald’. A wide variety of building and open space types will be created in these sub-areas.

Site plan
Campus Kiez is characterised by a highly dense spatial structure on large building plots, which allows for maximum flexibility and minimum use of space. The differentiated further development of the existing buildings and the addition of new buildings enable a new, future-orientated interpretation of the former barracks site. The central campus square is the heart of public life in the neighbourhood.

The Campus Park will connect the Campus Kiez neighbourhood to the Ringgleis and thus create an important, lively interface to the city as a whole.

The Campus Wald (engl. Forest) forms an important equalisation area of high ecological value opposite the Campus Kiez. As an experimental area, it will become a space for future-oriented education and research focussing on sustainability issues.

Transform-Motors

In a process-based transformation strategy, spaces are gradually opened up for appropriation and co-design in order to give various stakeholders the opportunity to contribute to the structural and programmatic development.

The development of Campus Wald is being designed as an ongoing process: A combination of reversible structural measures, campaigns to develop green spaces and an open offer for education and research will create a holistic and defining place for the campus that offers a strong balance to the urban campus neighbourhood.
