Franck-Areal

The Franck-Areal is located in one of Ludwigsburg’s most central areas: The former production site for coffee substitutes is situated directly next to the train station and defines the city’s skyline as seen from the tracks.

After production ceased at the end of 2018, the City of Ludwigsburg and the company Sovdwaer acquired the site. Since then, the city has owned the northern part of the site, which comprises approximately 14,000 m² of interior space within the former production and factory facilities, and has been working on its development since 2021.

The process began with the ›Neuland‹ festival, which provided public access to the site for the first time. This was followed by the ›ZwischenZeit‹ pilot phase.

Building on the collaboration during the festival, we were commissioned in 2022 to work with residents to develop a vision for the future of the site. This vision was incorporated into the subsequent call for proposals for the concept competition.

In 2023, the city administration launched the concept competition, which was accompanied by additional participatory formats for evaluating and refining the proposals.

Franck Safari and Franck Workshop
Participation in the development of vision statements

On Friday, November 25, and Saturday, November 26, 2022, residents had the opportunity to actively participate in the development concept of the Franck site together with representatives of the city administration and the city council.

On Friday, nearly 40 citizens explored the Franck site together with Mayor Dr. Matthias Knecht. At ten interactive stations, they shared their impressions and ideas about the site.
Building on this, the long-term development prospects for the Franck site were discussed on Saturday during three creative sprints. Ideas and suggestions for potential uses and desirable spatial qualities were gathered during these sessions.

In addition, residents were able to reflect on the completed pilot use phase and contribute ideas for possible future interim uses.

The complete documentation of the results can be found →here (GER).

Concept-based design competition
Participatory formats for concept evaluation

As part of the concept-based design competition, two planning teams developed different approaches for the future development of the Franck-Areal.
Both using concepts and designs were evaluated together with a chosen committee of stakeholders and residents, and suggestions for their further refinement were gathered.
