Nadelöhr
The redesign of Wiener Platz in Feuerbach is the central project in the Feuerbach 7 redevelopment area. The aim is to highlight the historical, present, and future significance of the square as a place of encounter and transition—especially in relation to the listed entrance building of the underground bunker. Against this backdrop, the BUNKER.RESONANZ ideas competition was launched, which sees art as a discursive tool in social processes. The focus is on the question of how a place can be designed and experienced between a culture of remembrance, urban space, and neighborhood.
The competition entry ›Nadelöhr‹ (Eye of the Needle) by the transdisciplinary team consisting of Anna Lehrer, Aida Nejad, Eva Dörr, and Lena Meinhardt combines perspectives from art, architecture, urban planning, sound, and participation. Part of the competition entry was a temporary on-site trial intervention that allowed participants to experience the spatial work process whilst the competition was still underway.
Test-intervention
The test intervention is intended as a fragmentary insight into the ongoing work process leading to the permanent work of art and is a spatial, sensory, and exploratory examination of the deep bunker. The starting point for the artistic work is the building itself—the listed deep bunker as an architectural repository of memory that carries memories through its structure, materiality, and location. Visually and acoustically, the test intervention approached the building and its materiality via the inconspicuous access points, which are designed as a kind of bottleneck.
A line traced changes in direction, thresholds, and transitions, bringing the sequence of movements from inside the structure up to the surface as a floor graphic on Wiener Platz. The sound installation added an acoustic dimension to the intervention, based on acoustic measurements and impressions gathered from conversations with passersby, which could be heard on site during the first three days.
A multysensory sculpture
A sculptural line is proposed as a permanent work of art, which follows the underlying floor plan exactly and incorporates access via lock 1.
It rises and falls as a three-dimensional sculpture and two-dimensional floor drawing across the design of the green spaces, emphasizing the orientation of the structure in the urban space. This makes the exact position of the bunker visible on the square—even to people who cannot enter it themselves.
Inside the sculpture are structure-borne sound transducers that transmit the immersive sound from inside the structure directly to the material and allow it to penetrate to the outside.
The proposal was awarded first prize and is expected to be realized.
