Neuland - Festival for City • Space • Art

Spatial interventions in the opening of an industrial brownfield site

The abandoned industrial site Franck-Areal, former production facility of the substitute coffee ›Caro‹, is amongst the very few currently unused inner-city plots in Ludwigsburg, right on the border of the main station. For decades, this space was closed to the public, thus terra incognita for most Ludwigsburg citizens. The NEULAND festival organized by the city of Ludwigsburg and the Wüstenrot Foundation opened the site to everyone for the first time.

Future fantasies • A jack-of-all-trades by and for the city?!

Based on the question of the future significance of the site as an urban place, our spatial installations and discursive methods dealt with the potentials and development possibilities of the site and its spaces. Together with experts, the potentials and opportunities of the site were discussed, the boundaries of the industrial complex were explored in installations and interactive stations. Based on this, scenarios for the future development of this urban space were envisioned.

Animation (Extract) • ›From Chicories to Fantasms‹ illustrates the important location and development of the site to the present day, and asks what can happen when it is used for new activities.

Throughout the weekend, events, workshops, exhibitions, talks, guided tours and much more took place. The aim was to make visitors aware of the site, enable them to discover its spaces and history, and to reflect on the possibilities it presents.

What potentials and opportunities does it have? Which new impulses can it provide for the city and its citizens?
